Blackjack Basic Strategy for Beginners

Blackjack rewards skill more than almost any casino game. Good "basic strategy" can cut the house edge to well under 1% — here's the beginner version.

The goal

Beat the dealer's hand without going over 21. You only ever play against the dealer, not other players.

The core moves

• Always stand on hard 17 or higher.
• Always hit hard 8 or lower.
• Double down on 11 (and often 10) when the dealer shows a weak card.
• Always split aces and eights; never split tens or fives.
• Stand on 12–16 when the dealer shows 2–6 (they're likely to bust); hit when they show 7+.

Rules that change the edge

Blackjack paying 3:2 (not 6:5), dealer standing on soft 17, and being allowed to double after splitting all help the player. Check the table rules before you sit.

What to skip

Insurance is a bad bet long-term — decline it. And no betting system changes the underlying math.

Blackjack is still gambling: the edge favours the house. Play within a budget and treat wins as a bonus.
